Understanding slope:

The slope of a line, commonly referred to in calculus as the derivative, measures the direction and steepness or a section connecting two different points. It is typically denoted with the variable m.

Generally speaking, the steepness of the line is measured by the absolute value of m in which a larger value indicates a steeper line. With the slope m, the direction of the line can be determined based on sign and value.

  • The line is increasing and moves in a positive upwards trend from left to right when m > 0
  • The line is decreasing and moves in a negative downwards trend from left to right when m < 0
  • The line has a constant slope and appears completely horizontal when m = 0
  • Vertical lines have undefined slopes given that the function would include 0 in the denominator.
